Reason for the Season. Really?

By Mickey Dunaway

This “Celebration of Christmas” is so far off the mark that it makes me feel ill in my spirit. Cocktail attire somehow does not remind me of the humble stable.  Paying $65 per person rather than using it to buy food for the poor and homeless is the antithesis of the meaning of Christmas.

Is this a sign of the times when our country’s spiritual foundation has totally lost its ability to guide us? It’s no wonder we are in such a mess when the values set by one of mankind’s most incredible events can be bastardized with a celebration at a country club and called the “Reason for the Season.”

I am sorry if this blog offends anyone, and that we can remain friends. I have not been to a church service in more than ten years, but my spiritual belief-system taught to me growing up in Sunday School and Big Church and as an adult are stronger than ever, and I am spiritually pained that people I know to be genuinely good could stray so far from the hallmark of Christianity.

  1. Cash bar also – hmm… just doesn’t go along with my down-home Christmas gatherings. ‘Course, this is not exactly a church potluck supper, which I greatly prefer. To each his own, I guess. Count me out on this one.
