Shame on You, Bette Midler

By Mickey Dunaway

On December 20 2021, Ms. Midler defamed EVERY one of us who is not from the east or west coast, Southern, Hillbillies, Rednecks whether we claim that moniker in jest or reverence.  Read what she wrote on Twitter:

**What #JoeManchin, who represents a population smaller than Brooklyn, has done to the rest of America, who wants to move forward, not backward, like his state, is horrible.  He sold us out.  He wants us all to be just like his state, West Virginia. Poor, illiterate and strung out.**

How dare you, Bette Midler—you pseudo-intellectual. Your intellect is found only in your own over-privileged mind. Shame on you for defaming the Jewish diaspora by belittling a group of people purely because of their income status and because they reside in West Virginia.  Sounds a bit like the reasons a certain German maniac used to kill millions of Jews a few decades ago.

From your rant and Hillary Clinton’s similar “basket of deplorables” metaphor, I must assume that you all do not believe that people from states like WVA deserve to have the same right to elect their senators as people from Brooklyn. The people of West Virginia elected Joe Manchin as one of their Senators. Funny, but that is how the constitution set it up. Perhaps you want to rewrite that document. Senator Machin has served as a senator since 2010, which means he has been re-elected once. WVA folks must like him since he also served as Governor from 2005-2010. BTW, he also graduated from West Virginia University. I find it interesting that WVA’s second senator is a Republican elected in 2015.  Shows me that the citizens of WVA are more open-minded than you, Ms. Midler.

I suggest you try open-mindedness. It really is more becoming of a 76-year-old than the blatant prejudice you spewed on Twitter on December 20, 2021.

If readers would like to contact Ms. Midler on Twitter, you can find her on Twitter at @BetteMidler.

One last thought. If you have not seen the documentary Hillbilly on Hulu, please watch it.  You will see what a Kentuckian hillbilly learned when she returned from Los Angeles, where she was a documentary filmmaker to her hometown. She returned to find out why so many of “her people” abandoned their long-held Democrat voting patterns to vote Republican in the 2016 Presidential election. This is not the movie or the book Hillbilly Elegy. This documentary is far superior!

Hillbilly explores the prejudice that east and west coast intellectuals have toward people who speak with an accent that places them as Hillbillies, Rednecks, Southern, Texans. You get the picture! Another BTW—our universities are teaching this false intellectual bias to the vulnerable not-quite-adult-students who come to their campuses seeking knowledge. What they find, instead, is scary opinionated “Bette Midlers.”

  2. Well said coach! It’s a shame that people generalise others that they have never met simply by their accent, their state of residence or their financial status. How ignorant, or how arrogant they are!
    Thank you for speaking out.

  3. She defamed the jewish diaspora? She is an American citizen and entitled to her opinion. Why not critique every one’s ancestors if you don’t like their opinion. You are a little sensitive-she only mentioned West Virginia. If she favors the coasts she has the same bias as other liberal state residents, and account for the weaknesses in the Democratic Party. What if she said that about our poorest state, Mississippi. Manchin is supported by the coal industry so is apposed to anything having to do with fighting global warming. His opposition to bbb child care credits hurts his constituents more proportionally than in most states. I am offended by your calling her a Jew rather than an east coast snob. Why are you signing out Middler. She is not the only one with similar opinions.
